“Commuting from Never Neverland”

By: James Gilliland

I live in Never Neverland and travel to reality every day. My passions are ideas and concepts that spark curiosity and open new perspectives, and my art is the process of turning those ideas into something tangible.

For the past eight years, that tangibility has been almost entirely 2D: graphic design, photography, and videography. With my camera, I chase honest, unscripted moments, people caught mid-story, fully present. My favorite shoot was at a NASCAR event. The speed, sound, and adrenaline fused into a visual story now featured in my portfolio.

At the core of my work is a desire and a request for you to “Let me tell your story.” I approach each subject with patience to observe, empathy to understand, and skill to make it real.

My creative journey began at River Arts in Chestertown, Maryland, when a photography club meeting ten years ago redirected my career from marketing and project management to art. Since then, I have refined my skills in visual communication at Delaware Technical Community College, combining technical accuracy with creative intuition.

Now, my work is expanding into three dimensions. I’ve started exploring kinetic art, blending my background in technology and graphic arts with clay sculpture that moves, responds, and connects. My current project, Kinetic Becoming, is a self-portrait shaped by my personal emotional and life experiences, serving as a point where form and movement meet, where the viewer’s interaction completes the story.
